Why is it important to spay your pets? [Weekend Snapshot]

The sutures.

"To spay/castrate/neuter animals are often mistakenly accepted as being inhuman by many who does not acknowledge the reason behind it."
Have you all been to any animal shelter?

At the animal shelter.
Most of these animals shelters are packed with strays, sick, orphaned, injured and castaways animals. With such big amount of unwanted and hurt animals coming in, the veterinarian and volunteers had no second choice, their funds are limited, and money keep pouring out to keep the animal in place. The Humane Society of the US quoted,

Number of cages and food supply are not the only problem, but also workmanship and help from expertise to nurse the needy ones. Some willingly help out in favour of the animals but some..... It is difficult to convince people of what they are doing at the shelter, many would turn their backs because they are only animals....

Adopt one at animal shelter.
[refer to previous post on My Siamese Cat - A Family Manner]
Healthy litters and adults are put up for adoption, hoping that there would more people that would step up to foster them. Unfortunately, most of them opt for animals displayed at shops which cost them 2 or 3 times even more. That . Some of the animals bought would suffer after the ownership when their owners decided that they are too tacky and time-consuming.

Their fate?

If they are lucky, these poor creatures would end up in foster homes or animal shelters, if they are not...... who knows? I've got three cats at my hometown and another stayed by my side. All of them are strays that I accidentally [ehem, ehem] picked up through numerous memorable incidences.

Buying upon thorough consideration.
We just don't simply decide to buy a pet before we make any commitments and plans to take care of their welfare. Animals are also living beings, they deserve the right to live a good life too. Their livelihood need not be an expensive one. Just necessary essentials are already the basics in providing a decent life. By purchasing pets from store, you are also alleged in encouraging the breeding industry. Why buy when you can adopt free of charge? Some people only realized that they are not fit (allergic) to be attached to animals only after they take one home.

What then?
You decide.

Kittens and puppies are adorable, but costly to keep.
When you don't want offspring, make sure your pets are spayed. A female feline can give birth to 4-5 kittens on average at each labour. Statistics from SPCA

"Starting from 2 cats, you may end up with as many as 20, 000 kittens in a matter of 17 years."

Animals too, suffer from over-population! Indirectly, they reproduce faster than the human population. In every three months, cats are already ready for the second batch of kittens. Afterwards, each would mature with time and soon, there would be more than just a litter. So, how many can you nurture in a year? It's a frightening figure if you would ask me. One of the stray cats that chose to shelter at my house gives birth every four months. This is a bitter fact that they are very reproductive and could not opt for birth control. As a matter of fact, it is our turn to help them.

Don't dump the litters at the back lanes or drainage just because you always see that they frequented those areas. Find them foster homes, or ask to put them to sleep. If you think it is inhuman to do it, think of their future, do you see any difference?

Spay/Neuter/Castrate
Her stitches are reddish and a bit swollen due to excessive licking and biting before the collar was introduced.

Any vet would provide the necessary services to spay your pets. There are the government clinics that lower payment (RM50-70 for cats) compared to private practices. I guess that is a pretty fair amount. For those who can afford ultimate satisfactory and optimum care, you can choose private ones where they charge from RM200-300 per cat [my experiences are often associated with cats]. Post-surgery care are focused only the first two days after the operation and the pets are confined within their cage for wound healing. I bet vets can do better than me in advising.

Go to the vet if you are unsure and needed extra advice about this. They are a big help to animal keepers.

Benefits.
Animals that underwent these minor surgeries would have longer lifespan. They would also have privileged to health benefits. What other good better than this? This can save up a lot on medical fees to treat illnesses arising from sexual conduct with other animals. By spaying, you would help to control the population of strays on streets. Automatically, there would be lesser of them to be put to sleep. We can do our bit to help their young from getting knocked or killed by accidents. We've seen them lying helplessly on the tar roads, I'm sure you don't mean to drive over them....

Do visit SPCA's website on the facts on, "Why we should spay our pets?". It is pretty interesting to note them.

Think for your pets,
have them neutered.

International Year of the Reef (IYOR) 2008

International Year of the Reef 2008

Have you all heard of IYOR? It is actually an initiative to declare the year specially dedicated to coral reefs! It was first announced at 1997 and it was a hit then. And this year, it is still a major event worldwide. People around the globe are encouraged to learn more about the importance of coral reefs and help to reduce unnecessary human impacts towards their livelihood. Plus, it is also a guide as to how to protect the reefs and its ecosystem from exploitation, pollution, environmental degradation and destruction.

They even have a song for this occasion! Cool huh?! The song can be downloaded from the Reef Check website as an effort to promote the campaign.

For Malaysians, the peak of the campaign would be a five-day (20th-24th) agenda held at One Utama Shopping Complex, Damansara, Kuala Lumpur. Be sure to attend the event starting from tomorrow onwards!! The Malaysia Chapter has got hold of some beneficial activities in it's programme as a collaborative effort from :-

  • Marine Park Malaysia
  • Coral Malaysia
  • Reef Check Malaysia
  • Malaysian Nature Society
  • WWF
  • Maritime Inst. of Malaysia (MIMA)
  • Taylor's College
  • Ministry of Natural Resources & Environment (NRE)

I'm sure it would be an exciting one. I'm just disappointed that I could not attend it. From what I've learn throughout the years, you simply just could not study about the corals by the book, it needs extra skills and knowledge where experience says it all.

So, make it an effort to realize what these underwater treasures had in-stored for us and our future generations! You really don't know what you're going to miss.....

Vegetarian Dish on Chinese New Year

While most would spend lavishly on shark fin's servings, abalone or pork dishes, my family opt for vegetarian meals throughout the first day of the auspicious year. There are not only mouth-watering but also, easy to be prepared.

Some people claimed that the usage of artificial colorings and preservatives hinder their desire to practice being a vegetarian. As for my family on normal vegetarian days, we believe not too much servings on manufactured meat-free frozen food which is selling hot in the market, but we focused more on true vegetables (yes, the green ones!).

Of course, there are a few exceptions during major celebrations like Chinese New Year. In theme with the glorious celebration, we have a variety of meat-less food served on the table on Chor-Yat (1st Day).

CHAR SIEW- BRAISED ROASTED PORK

LOR HON ZAI- ASSORTED VEG-ALIKES
MUTTON CURRY WITH POTATOES
ASSORTED MUSHROOMS

CHICKEN DRUMSTICK

A WONDERFUL MEAL
The drumsticks are made to look like the real ones, the same goes to other servings. The whole idea is to sell better to cultivate more desire in choosing vegetarian meals instead. The main ingredients are mostly carbohydrates which is good for burning fat and energy consumption.

Nevertheless, it is a good way to encourage healthier lifestyles.

Exquisite "Tuan Yuan Fan" @ "Tuan Nian Fan"

"Tuan Yuan Fan" is every Chinese family practice in maintaining family tradition in embarking the Chinese New Year. The reunion dinner usually takes place a day before the exact new year according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. Every member of the family would return to their hometown to unite with their parents, siblings, relatives and friends to celebrate the important celebration.

The meal is so important for every family that rare delicacies using auspicious ingredients (eg. certain fishes, vegetables) would be prepared. Some other ingredients which sounds inappropriate for the season would be avoided (eg. bitter-gourd, cuttlefish). Every meal would be named after upon cooking hoping to give remark to a good start. In restaurants, meals can be to pricey and expensive just for the celebration. With most of the Chinese having strong beliefs and quite peculiar in the naming of every dish, restaurants would benefit the whole lot from this tradition.

As for my family, we prefer home-cooked meals in preserving the Hakka-Chinese values in the family just at home. We would help out in the kitchen creating mouth-watering dishes equally tasty to those at restaurants. Most importantly, it brings us together.

"Tuan Yuan Fan" is indeed a family identity.

Stephen Chow at CJ7 Premier

Gosh, last Monday was great. I was strolling at Bukit Bintang street when I came across a huge crowd in front of the Pavilion mall.

Surprise! Surprise!

It's the premier for CJ7!!!

Little do I remember a single thing about Stephen Chow coming to KL to promote his new movie - CJ7 until I saw people crowding the entrance of the newly-opened shopping mall. And, the crowd was huge. Everybody lined up patiently (this is really unexpected) and waited for the Hong Kong superstar since -God knows when-.

As I coincidently got caught up with this once in a lifetime event, I decided to leap on the opportunity to get a glimpse of my much favorited actor of all time.
Upon his arrival, he was ushered rather too quickly across the red carpet before anyone could even see him or wave at him. Pathetic securities! All the waiting made no sense after all. Well, he was kinda cool and crisp with his comedian character. And, that pays off well.

Stephen Chow appeared casual with creamy-beige jacket clad with jeans with his face partially covered with a black hat.

The crowd had loved him for his short-timed appearance and finally he was again ushered through the back door at the end of the show.
And that's all for a glimpse of the superstar.

As I made my way back to the monorail station, I was rudely interrupted by a police escort bike. And, guess who just passed by directly in front of me in a driven Mercedes?

Stephen Chow!!!

Aaahhh... what a day. After all, I'm not really a fanatic fan for artists.

Weekend Snapshot : My Culture - petite Cheongsams

Pretty Cheongsams (female) and Samfoos (male) dressed for a world culture session.

Malaysian Cultural Community
a rich combination of Dusun, Iban, Kadazan, Indian, Chinese, Malay and Dayak dresses.

WHOA!

It really had been a hectic weekend. Nevertheless, it had been a wonderful get-together before our one-week break for the auspicious year! And here we are, dressed colourfully for our last session of video-conferencing with undergraduates from Lima, Peru. They were all astonished to discover how our dresses vary from one another due to our multi-cultural community in Malaysia. We were then proud of our M'sian status. It somehow gave people from foreign countries some real ideas that there aren't only one race in this peculiar country. Although we would laugh at the remarks they made about us (mainly Chinese and Indians) being migrants, somehow, it was a depressing thought that people don't really understand our vast variety of culture here.

Just around the corner, the new year for the Chinese would be celebrated for a month long. Celebrations in Malaysia are meant for everyone-even though Chinese New Year are mainly celebrated by Chinese, but over here, people of other races get their share of fun too. Nevertheless, Malaysia is known for their many celebrations and festive holidays.

I really hope my pictures does not only open eyes but also, open your minds to who we really are.

Happy Chinese New Year
&
Gong Xi Fatt Chai
